How Long Does It Take For Menstruation To Resume After Child Birth?

I am writing on this topic because of a mail received from one of the readers of this blog. Though, she has been replied but I decided to bring it here so as to help other readers who might be having this in mind too.

And the question goes thus, "Please Help! I have not menstruated after two months and eight days I gave birth." 

The issue of when a menstruation returns after birth disturbs a lot of nursing mothers especially the first timers. What you must know for sure is that every woman's body and circumstances are different which makes it impossible to state exactly when to expect the first postpartum monthly flow.

However, one activity that serves as a determinant on how soon or otherwise you start menstruating again is breastfeeding. If you are a mother who breastfeeds exclusively or you have a baby who sucks day and night, then you can continue enjoying yourself without having to think of any menstrual pains, cramps or even shop for tampons. It can take up to six months or even longer before you see your menses again. I will call this an advantage of breastfeeding to mothers. (smiles)

From what i have explained above, it is very clear that the direct opposite of this same activity will bring back your menstruation sooner. If your baby sleeps a lot from early stage or throughout the night most of the time and sucks less which makes you breastfeed less, or you supplement breastfeeding with formula, it is very likely you start your period sooner than six months after child birth.

For those who do not nurse their babies (100% formula-feeding), if your period fails to come back between the first and third month, please contact your doctor quickly. You may either be pregnant (if you have unprotected sex) or have other issues.

Generally, all moms and those who are about to become one should be notified that breastfeeding doesn't mean your ovulation will cease. You should not forget that your body releases its very first postpartum egg prior to your menstruation and if you follow the myth that you not yet fertile because you are still breastfeeding, you may end up being pregnant and caught unaware. 

If you must have sex, know how to use birth control to protect yourself. Many nursing mothers get this unplanned pregnancies because they think they are still free to have unprotected sex without any fear of being pregnant.

NOTE: My explanation above is a description of the general pattern postpartum periods take, if yours goes the other way round, it doesn't mean you are having issues. You just have to study yourself to know which pattern your own takes.

After child birth, your first menstrual flow may come back lighter or heavier than it used to be before you became pregnant and at times your period may be irregular. Don't panic as it will come back to normal. If it however becomes irregular for more than few months or you experience an unusual heavy flow of period for over three cycles, ensure you inform your doctor to check against any hormonal or uterine issues.
